Good marketing and advertising asks one question over and over: "Why?"

To be effective in communicating with customers and prospects, you must understand their needs. That means asking "why" many, many times.

  • "Why did you get into this business?"
  • "Why do customers spend money with you?"
  • "Why do they trust you?"
  • "Why is your product or service important to them?"
  • "Why is it better? Is it better?"
  • "Why did you choose that shade of paint to decorate your showroom?"
  • "Why did you choose that design for your logo?"
  • "Why do you want to have your picture taken there?"
  • "Why do think your competitor's video is so good?"

To create messaging that customers and prospects listen to, you must first understand what messages they want and like to hear — and why —  and what they value — and why. That requires serious investigation.

Sometimes this confuses people. They think marketing and advertising is a process of sitting in a little room with a bunch of artists and copy writers and, finally, someone jumps up and yells, "Yesss!!! I've got it!" Then, they start spouting genius ad copy with wild, bulging eyeballs and flailing hands. Well, forget "Mad Men" and all the advertising movies you've seen because it's not that way ... well, not usually.

It requires lots of careful investigative work to really understand who your customer is, who you really are and what your company stands for. That's when you take everything you know and ask, "Based on all this info, why would a customer leave another company to do business with me?" The creative parts take over after you have all the facts and have found a "voice" to speak to your customers – one to which they listen closely.

This investigative exercise is why Frank Communications is known as "The Whys Guys."SM

It is an in-depth process than surprises many people because they learn things about their company — and often themselves — they didn't know. In the end, if we've done our work well together, your business thrives, your customers love you, your employees are happy and everyone gets the benefit.
